the rules
The rules of the competition consist of a combination of the rules of golf as governed by the R&A and other rules and policies which apply to the UK Championships Golf League itself.
The rules have been broken into sections to make it easy for you to find the information you are looking for. Click on a link from the list below to find out more about the rules of the competition, or scroll down the page if you want to view everything.
If you have difficulty understanding any of the rules, or cannot find something you are looking for, please email us at info@ukchampionships.co.uk

THE RULES OF GOLF
All UK Championships Golf League matches will be played in accordance with the Rules of golf and any local rules as approved by the club committee.
It is your responsibility as a player to have a good understanding of the rules of golf as laid down by the R&A. For more information on the rules of golf see the R&A website at www.randa.co.uk. You must ensure you have a good understanding of the rules before taking part in any match. Please ensure that you have a copy of the rules with you when playing your matches in case you need to refer to them. You can pick up a free copy of the rules of golf from most club pro shops.
If there is any doubt over a ruling, please follow the guidelines in the next section of this page - Clarification of The Rules. You should not sign a player’s card if you cannot both agree that the match has been played in accordance with the rules.
CLARIFICATION OF THE RULES
If you are unsure of a particular rule during a match, you have a number of options:
1) You may ask the other player(s) in the match if they know the rule or if they have an opinion on what to do. However the final decision on what to do rests with you and you must take ultimate responsibility for your decision.
2) You may refer to a copy of the rules of golf; however you must ensure that you do not cause undue delay to either your fellow competitors in the match or other players on the course.
3) You can play the ball as you believe it should be played in accordance with the rules and then double check the ruling at the end of the match. This can be done either by reading the rule book in more detail or by consulting one of the course professionals. If you find out that you made an incorrect judgement on the course and broke the rules, you should score no Stableford points for the hole in question.
In all circumstances you should endeavour to resolve disputes or doubts concerning the rules whilst at the course and without consulting the UK championships committee.
However if you cannot resolve an issue, please inform the championship committee at info@ukchampionships.co.uk
Important Note on Clarification of the Rules
If the championship committee are asked to get involved in deciding on rulings or disputes of any nature, their first priority will be to investigate what measures players have taken themselves to find a resolution.
If reasonable steps have not been taken to find a resolution, this may result in disqualification regardless of the outcome of the ruling. Please try your best to resolve any disputes yourselves to avoid this eventuality.
ARRANGING MATCHES
Players must ensure that all matches are played and results returned by the deadlines specified for each tournament (see the League Calendar for deadlines).
MATCH PRACTICE
There are no restrictions on the number of practice rounds that can be played prior to any round. This includes practice rounds played on the course on the same day of a match.
TEES
All matches should be played from the medal tees unless the club in question strictly prohibits the use of medal tees for non-club matches. Where this is the case, the tees of the day can be used. If your club prohibits the use of medal tees this must be stated in the appropriate place on your application form.
BUGGIES, TROLLIES & CADDIES
There are no restrictions on the use of buggies, trolleys or caddies during any match other than restrictions that may be imposed by the golf club on the day of a match.
SCORE CARDS
At the start of a match all players must swap cards and the details of the match must be recorded in accordance with the rules of Stableford golf.
At the end of the match, the scores should be cross referenced, checked for errors and amended if necessary before signing.
Abandoned Matches
If a match needs to be abandoned due to extreme weather conditions, the match should be resumed from where it was left as soon as possible. If it is not possible to resume play from where it was left, contact the UK Championships organisers.
If a match needs to be abandoned for any other reason, contact the UK Championships organisers who will advise on the appropriate course of action.
DISQUALIFICATION
Any breach of the rules of golf, or of the rules of the UK Championships Golf League may result in disqualification. The organiser’s decision will be final in all matters relating to the competition and disqualification.
MISSED DEADLINES
The penalty for failing to complete your match and return your results by the specified deadlines is disqualification.
Tie breaks
In the event of a tie break in any of the leagues, winners will be determined by way of countback using the score for the best back 9, back 6, back 3, front 9, front 6, front 3.
For the County Leagues and National League, this will be taken from the average scores i.e. a tie for first place would be decided by the player with the best average score for their back nine holes for all of their matches played.
